Module Wind Energy Laboratory

The module „Wind Energy Laboratory“ is a newly developed course with the intention of giving students with academic experience in wind energy the chance to deepen their existing knowledge. The development of the course is funded by the program “Studien-Reform-Project” and has been undertaken as a co-work of the “FG Experimentelle Strömungsmechanik” and “FG Fluidsystemdynamik”.

In winter semester, the course “Aeroelastic Simulation of Wind Turbines” gives insight to wind turbine simulation software, modeling and evaluating forces & loads for various HAWT types.

In summer semester, the course “Measurement Techniques and Wind Tunnel testing” focusses on the interaction of the aerodynamically generated torque and its conversion to electrical power. The interaction of how the generator control  impacts on the wind turbines behavior and , reversely , how the rotational speed as well as aerodynamic torque affects the behavior of the charging electronics will be imparted by measurements as well as programming tasks.

The course “Construction of a small Wind Turbine” focusses on the connections and interactions of blades, generator & charging electronics of a 400 W small wind turbine by manufacturing these relevant parts by themselves. The attendance of “Construction of a small Wind Turbine” is mandatory to complete the module “Wind Energy Laboratory”.

Winter semester:

  • 1. Aeroelastic Simulation fo Wind Turbines (October-February, Wed. 14:00 - 16:00)
    • application-oriented simulation with the simulation software "Qblade"
    • Airfoil & Blade design
    • BEM & LLT simulations
    • structural analysis
    • aeroelastic simulation of wind turbines, DLC, load analysis
  • 2. Construction of a small Wind Turbine (5 days Workshop during semester break, tba.)
    • manufacturing of all relevant parts of a fully functioning small wind turbine
    • practical, manual work in the workshops of TU Berlin
    • self-oganization in small groups and independent time management and working methods

Summer Semester:

Details about the summer semster seminar "Measurement Techniques and Wind Tunnel testing" will be announced by the end of the winter semester.

Prerequisites

The module is based on the "Wind Energy - Fundamentals", "Wind Energy-Project / Deepening" and "Fluid Dynamics I + II". Therfore, the mentioned courses are highly recommended but not a mandatory prerequisite.

The course is part of the module list within

  • M.Sc. Physikalische Ingenieurwissenschaft in section 2.2b (Strömungsmechanik Ergänzungsbereich) and section 3 (Projektmodule) (6LP)
  • M.Sc. Maschinenbau in section 2.3 (Produkte) (6LP)
  • M.Sc. Regenerative Energiesysteme in section "EVT-Pflichtlabor II" as a "Projekt" (8LP)

All other students may attend the course as "Freie Wahl" and can contact the "Prüfungsobmann/obfrau" of their course of studies for possible exceptions.

Registration

Course registration for the module in WS 2017/2018 will be available from Monday, 18th September - Monday, 9th October 2017
