Module Wind Energy Laboratory

The module „Wind Energy Laboratory“ is a newly developed course with the intention of giving students with academic experience in wind energy the chance to deepen their existing knowledge. The development of the course is funded by the program “Studien-Reform-Project” and has been undertaken as a co-work of the “FG Experimentelle Strömungsmechanik” and “FG Fluidsystemdynamik”.

In winter semester, the course “Aeroelastic Simulation of Wind Turbines” gives insight to wind turbine simulation software, modeling and evaluating forces & loads for various HAWT types.

The course "Wind Turbine Measurement Techniques" is an interactive laboratory course and takes place in summer semester. During the semester the students develop a measurement campaign and consequently perform measurements concerning e.g. the power curve on a micro wind turbine. Application-related aerodynamic and electro-technical interrelations are mediated and the use of measurement technology as well as the evaluation and data analysis are applied. In order to prepare the students for their master thesis and other scientific assignments, small research tasks are carried out and a scientific paper is authored.

The course “Construction of a small Wind Turbine” focusses on the connections and interactions of blades, generator & charging electronics of a 400 W small wind turbine by manufacturing these relevant parts by themselves. The attendance of “Construction of a small Wind Turbine” is mandatory to complete the module “Wind Energy Laboratory”.

Summer semester:

  • 1. "Wind Turbine Measurement Techniques" 19.04.2018 - 19.07.2018, Thursdays 09:00 s.t. - 12:00)
    • Independently conducted research tasks
    • Development of a measurement campaign
    • Conduction of measurements on a generator test stand
    • Collection, analysis and evaluation of data
    • Composition of a scientific paper
  • 2. Construction of a small Wind Turbine (5 days Workshop during semester break, tba.)
    • manufacturing of all relevant parts of a fully functioning small wind turbine
    • practical, manual work in the workshops of TU Berlin
    • self-oganization in small groups and independent time management and working methods

Prerequisites

The module is based on the "Wind Energy - Fundamentals", "Wind Energy-Project / Deepening" and "Fluid Dynamics I + II". Therfore, the mentioned courses are highly recommended but not a mandatory prerequisite.

The course is part of the module list within

  • M.Sc. Physikalische Ingenieurwissenschaft in section 2.2b (Strömungsmechanik Ergänzungsbereich) and section 3 (Projektmodule) (6LP)
  • M.Sc. Maschinenbau in section 2.3 (Produkte) (6LP)
  • M.Sc. Regenerative Energiesysteme in section "EVT-Pflichtlabor II" as a "Projekt" (8LP)

All other students may attend the course as "Freie Wahl" and can contact the "Prüfungsobmann/obfrau" of their course of studies for possible exceptions.

There are still a few places available. Registration will be extended to Wednesday, 25th April 2018. Students that already registered within the first registration period can definitly participate. Students from the second registration period will be chosen by lottey.
