Experimental characterization of a cluster of acoustic dampers

Acoustic pressure oscillations can arise in combustors due to thermoacoustic instabilities. If the amplitude of these oscillations becomes too high, they can cause structural damage to the combustor. Therefore, they need to be damped. A common approach for the damping of pressure oscillation in a cavity is to attach retro-fit acoustic dampers, also known as Helmholtz Resonators (HR).


During the first stage of this project, a set of HRs have been designed, manufactured and experimentally characterized. Each of them absorbs acoustic energy in a distinct, narrow frequency band. Starting from the available measurements, in the next phase a cluster of dampers needs to be designed and experimentally characterized. For the second phase,

we are hiring a student (40 or 60 hours per month, for 4 months) to: 

  • Design a cluster of HRs by using available models and data on single dampers;
  • Optimize the position of each HR in the cluster to maximize broad-band acoustic absorption in a cavity;
  • Characterize and validate experimentally the acoustic impedance of the cluster


The position will start from September 2020 and will last until December 2020


We are looking for a student in mechanical engineering or similar subject, with an interest for experimental work and modelling of acoustic phenomena. You will be collaborating with PhD candidates and experienced Researchers at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Technical Acoustics, and learning state of the art methods for the measurements and modeling of acoustic impedances.
